They’ll Be Fine

Day 3 - best friends/pillow talk/selfie (combined three prompts into one for this drabble).

Author’s Notes: My first and very late contribution to Gou All Out week, I have four more drabbles in the works to be published tonight and tomorrow. This one is dedicated to rockhoppernagisa as the Nagisa that’s been there for my Free muses basically since the beginning and who’s become one of my closest Tumblr and IRL friends.

        “Gou-chan.”

        “What?”

        “How do you think their first week was?”

        “I’m sure it was fine, why wouldn’t it be?”

        Shrugging slightly and shifting a little where he lay, both hands came to prop the blonde’s head up on the pillow as a side-glance was thrown the redhead’s way. Gou’s eyes glanced off to the side as he moved beside her, keeping her eyes on the ceiling. The only light in the room that was coming from her bedside lamp was casting a strange lighting on Nagisa’s face, but she could still see the thoughtful expression in his eyes.

        The first week back to the new school year had been strange. Homeroom, eating lunch, swim practice after school (read: dry land workouts since it was still too cold to swim), it’d felt like there was a small void in the now third year’s daily school activities, and in a way there was in the form of two missing Iwatobi graduates who were now five hours away in Tokyo. Of course the third years were taking it in stride, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a tinge of sadness in their days still with no Makoto-senpai, Haruka-senpai, no Mako-chan and Haru-chan to hang out with. It was only natural to miss your closest friends after all.

        Gou’s phone suddenly vibrated by her side, the dim light from the screen barely casting a glow onto the wall. It’d been lazily left within reach on the mattress in the off chance she got a message while she and Nagisa were just laying there, and now she was glad she did. The message was from none other than her brother asking how her night was going.

        It’d only been two weeks since the airplane stole her brother away to Australia for a second time, but so far he’d kept his promise to stay in better contact with her this time, and it brought a smile to the younger’s face every time she saw she had something new from him, even if it was just a silly selfie sent with him re-finding something fun to do around Sydney.

        Holding the phone over enough that Nagisa could see the message too, Gou wasted no time unlocking her phone so a reply could be typed up.

text message: [ onii-chan ] it’s pretty good! ate out with nagisa-kun and rei-kun after practice, now nagisa-kun’s over here until his oka-san wants him home.

        Nagisa at least waited for Gou to send her own message before he was grabbing the phone to type out a message of his own. Nevermind the fact that his own phone hadn’t left his pocket since this morning.

text message: [ onii-chan ] RIN-CHAN!! MAKE SURE YOU BE CAREFUL OF THOSE CRAZY BIRDS I HEARD DIVE BOMB PEOPLE IN THE SPRING!! REI-CHAN WAS TALKING ABOUT THEM YESTERDAY AT LUNCH. o(-`д´- ｡)

        Laughing quietly as she saw the second message get sent off, Gou couldn’t even get mad about the momentary hijacking of her phone; she knew her brother would be happy to hear from all his friends too. Scooting closer to the blonde, Gou rested her head back on the breaststroker’s arm and held the phone out at arm’s length, snapping a picture as soon as they both immediately assumed a silly face and a peace sign from their adjacent hands. Typical selfie pose for the duo. Sending the picture off with a simple ‘hope you’re having fun, both of us are thinking about you’ message (and forwarding it to Makoto and Haru as well, no friend was getting left out of the text message love even though the latter still seldom checked his cell), the phone got set back down beside her, but Gou stayed where she was nestled against Nagisa.

        “I’m sure onii-chan’s having a good time too. He just seems happier this time around.”

        “Yeah, things’ll be different this time Gou-chan. He’s gonna kick butt of all the swimmers over there and then come back and kick butt with the National team!”

        “I hope so, now that he’s got Haruka-senpai aiming for the same goal, he’s going to go all out trying for the same thing.”
